Lawrence Gunn began his career with Miami Dade County as a
member of the Para- Transit Division in 2001. Not long after, he was
promoted to a full-time Bus Operator for Miami-Dade Transit in 2003. After
serving the organization in that capacity for close to ten years, Lawrence felt
that he wanted to do more to not only serve the organization, but his fellow
coworkers. So, he ran for a seat on the Executive Board in 201,2. and was
elected to fill one of the Transportation Vice President positions.
Lawrence was later appointed to Uniform Representative for Local 291
Bus Operations Division. As Uniform Representation, he spearheaded a
campaign which led to the introduction of the polo-style shirts as part of the
transit uniform. Lawrence's innovation drive didn't stop there, however. Shortly thereafter, he
launched another campaign that allowed and encouraged transit personnel to wear pink polo style
shirts during October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Along with his primary positions, Lawrence serves over 1,700 Miami-Dade County bus
operators as a Map Counselor, a member of the Rostering Committee for TWU 291, and the
substitute Shop Steward for all three divisions. Lawrence is also the chair for the Safety
Committee that represents TWU Local 291 and its members by working closely with Miami-Dade
County's Safety Committee Panel.
